What Does 'status suspended' Mean?

If you've received notification that your web site has been placed on status : suspended from a web ring, it could be for any number of reasons. The most common reasons a site would be suspended are:

  • the automated link verification program, which searches each web ring site for existence of the appropriate web ring code, did not find the code on the page you listed with the web ring when you joined [ solution A ]

  • your web ring code is outdated and must be replaced [ solution B ]

  • the code was found on the page, but was somehow corrupted and, thusly, the navigational links are not functional [ solution B ]

  • your web page was inaccessible, moved, or no longer exists [ solution C ]

  • you were hot-linking to web ring images from other web ring pages without permission [ solution D ]

  • your web page does not provide sufficient content to qualify for the particular ring you have joined [ solution E ]

How to Resolve Problems

  1. Please modify your web ring profile and indicate on which exact page of your web site where your web ring code will be found. If you have removed the web ring code from your web site, or the web ring code cannot be verified, your site will be excluded from this web ring following a suspension period of 7 days. If you have not already transferred your old web ring ID to the new system, you can update your old membership information by visiting new.webring.com/h?manage.html. [ top ]

  2. Re-install a fresh, new copy of the web ring code and test it to make sure you can navigate to all of the links included in the code snippet (previous, random, next, etc.). You can obtain the latest copy of the web ring code by signing in with your user name and password at www.webring.org. If you have not already migrated your old web ring ID to the new system, you can update your old membership information by visiting new.webring.com/h?manage.html. If your webmaster had set up your ring membership and web ring code previously, you may need to contact them to update this information. The ringmaster cannot do this for you. [ top ]

  3. If your web page was temporarily inaccessible for any reason, the link verification program should be able to verify your ring code on subsequent attempts. Once it verifies your code is installed, your site will automatically be re-activated and added to the web ring. If, however, your web page has moved, you will need to (A) modify your ring profile, as well as (B) install a working copy of the web ring code on the same page you have listed with the web ring. If your web site no longer exists - the site will be automatically deleted from the web ring following a 7 day suspension period (to eliminate "dead" links within the web ring). [ top ]

  4. If you have been hot-linking to web ring images without permission (directly linking to web ring graphics from the ringmaster's server) you must modify your ring code to only use images saved and uploaded to your own web site, or images provided via the web ring code, at once. To continue to refer to images from the ringmaster's web site without permission will get your site deleted from the web ring if this is not rectified within the [7] day time limit following notification of suspension. Note: the "new" web ring codes all reference images served by www.webring.org - which also helps eliminate this problem. If you wish to start over with a fresh copy of the ring code, please refer to (A) and (B). [ top ]

  5. Each web ring has a particular criteria to be met and maintained for membership. Please review general criteria, as well as the criteria posted for which ever web ring you have joined. Also, please reference updates & changes to understand how they may affect your web ring membership. There may be a different web ring your site may be perfectly suited for, however. Generally speaking - each web site must include substantial, sufficient content for the web ring it belongs to. Personal pages, incomplete pages, dysfunctional pages, unrelated pages, or "link farms" do not qualify for membership. Sites reviewed that do not meet membership criteria may be suspended and/or deleted at any time.[ top ]

Essentially, sites in these web rings must be functional, accessible, and reflect the criteria of membership. Please understand that because several of the "red flags" the verification program looks for are automated as it travels many thousands of member sites, notice of suspended status is not intended to be a personal attack against you or your web site! A site in suspended status gives the web ring member an opportunity to correct any existing problems before the site may be deleted from the ring, and ensure that visitors navigating between web rings sites have the best experience possible.

Get A New Copy of The Ring Code

If you have lost a clean, intact copy of your ring code, or if the ring code was not saved when you first joined, current ring members can get another by clicking the link below and accessing the ring management system:

www.webring.org

But I Joined A Long Time Ago...

If you joined any of these equine web rings "ages" ago and/or have not yet "migrated" your old information into the "new" web ring system, you can update all of your old information and receive a new, universal username and password that will allow you to manage all of your ring sites from one location < whew! >

new.webring.com/h?manage.html

This will also give you access to the most current versions of any web ring navigation codes for updating your existing web ring pages.

Eventually (very soon), all members of these web rings must have a current copy of the web ring navigation code installed on their page(s) and current membership information on file to maintain membership. Sites displaying outdated code and/or outdated membership information may be suspended or deleted from the ring(s). If deleted they may reapply for membership, however, and re-join so long as their site meets the membership criteria.
